Has the name Hilda been retired?
Only in the Atlantic. Hilda is on NHC’s list of retired Atlantic names because of the 1964 storm (Tropical Cyclone Naming History and Retired Names). The East Pacific keeps separate lists, and Hilda is still on the 2027 list there.
When will Hilda be used again?
Hilda is next scheduled for 2027, when the 2027 list is used. The six lists rotate, so each one returns every six years.
A name on the list is used only if the season gets that far. Hilda is name 8 of 24, and 45 of the 46 East Pacific seasons from 1980 to 2025 got that far.
Why was the storm named Hilda?
Names go in alphabetical order, one per storm, as each storm reaches tropical-storm strength (39 mph, 34 knots), so a storm’s place in its season decides its name.
In each of 2021, 2015, 2009, 2003, 1997 and 1985, Hilda was the 8th name used in the East Pacific season.
Seasons where our archive is missing an earlier name are left out, because we can’t confirm the count.

- East Pacific: 1985, 1991, 1997, 2003, 2009, 2015 and 2021
