Storm distance FAQ
How is the distance calculated?
We measure the great-circle distance from your city or ZIP code to the storm’s center position in the latest National Hurricane Center advisory. Damaging winds, rain and surge can reach far beyond the center, so a large distance does not mean you are safe.
What does “inside the forecast cone” mean?
The cone shows where the storm’s center is likely to track, based on NHC forecast errors over the past five years. About one-third of the time the center moves outside the cone, and impacts often extend well beyond it.
How accurate is the tropical-storm wind arrival estimate?
It is a rough estimate from the official forecast track and the current tropical-storm wind radius. For planning, use the NHC “Earliest Reasonable Arrival Time of Tropical-Storm-Force Winds” graphic and your local forecast office.
Can I get a warning when a storm threatens my area?
You can join the HurriTracker alert waitlist, but email delivery is not enabled yet. Registration saves your email and location only. Official watches, warnings and evacuation orders come from your national weather service and local authorities.
